Bike sharing in some form or another is now available in over 500 cities in 50 countries around the world. And recently Bangkok also got in on the act with their own bike share scheme – Pun Pun Bike Share. There are currently 50 bike stations, with plans to build more. The current stations cover the central area of Bangkok, mostly around Sukhumvit and Silom.
Bangkok Bike Share Details
The Bangkok bike share is know as Pun Pun, and currently costs 320 baht ($11) to join. This includes a 100 baht ($3.35) credit for bike rides. And the bike rides themselves are incredibly cheap. The first 15 minutes is free, with rides of up to an hour only costing 10 baht ($0.35). The maximum charge for over 8 hours is only 100 baht. Full details are as follows:
First 15 minutes: FREE
Up to 1 hour: 10 baht
Up to 3 hours: 20 baht
Up to 5 hours: 40 baht
Up to 6 hours: 60 baht
Up to 8 hours: 80 baht
Over 8 hours: 100 baht
The bike stations are open from 7 am to 8 pm. Overnight borrowing isn’t allowed, so bikes not returned by 8 pm will incur a 500 baht ($17) fine. Lost bikes will be charged at 8,000 baht ($270).
To apply for a Pun Pun card, you’ll need to take your passport to one of the following manned bike stations. They’ll take your photo and issue you with a card and PIN number, and also show you how to lock and unlock the bikes.
