This year we went to see the annual candle festival in Ubon Ratchathani, a large town in Thailand’s northeast near the border with Cambodia. The candle festival takes place in many town across Thailand, but the one in Ubon Ratchathani is one of the largest and most popular. This is a fairly modern hotel that’s about 4 km from Thung Si Muang, the main location of the candle festival. There’s a coffee shop at the hotel and comfortable outdoor seating. The reception area sells snacks such as crisps and pot noodles. If you don’t have a car I’d suggest getting a hotel closer to Thung Si Muang, as this hotel may be a little too far away. But it’s quite easy to get taxi from the hotel.
Our room had a large, comfortable bed, great aircon, TV, fridge, wardrobe, desk and chair. The room was 950 baht ($30) per night, but I think it might usually be a little cheaper, as most hotels charge extra during the candle festival. It was quite good value for money though. The price also included breakfast.
The bathroom was fairly small, but good enough for our needs. We were provided with towels, soap and sachets of shampoo, but no extras such as shower cap, etc.
The hotel has quite a large car park, so it’s easy to park if you’re coming by car. It’s also pretty easy to find, as it’s located just behind the huge Tesco Lotus on Highway 212. If you’re heading south, you’ll see Tesco Lotus on your left. You need to turn left directly after the car park. It’s only a small lane, but it has a Better Place sign pointing the way. Just head down that road, then take a left and a right. The hotel is well signposted, so you shouldn’t miss it.
The wifi at the hotel worked fairly well and the speeds were good, though a little variable. In the morning it tested at around 8 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. It was a little slower when I tested it in the evening, but still quite good. See speed test result above.
