Surin is a town in northeast Thailand, and despite its small size it has some great coffee shops. They are often hidden away though, so here’s a guide to what’s available.
Kaffe Italia
Kaffe Italia is one of my favorite places to have coffee when I’m in Surin. It has beautiful outdoor seating that’s out of the sun, so is a pleasant place to sit and read.
This cafe is just a short walk from Thong Tarin Hotel, which is one of the main hotels in Surin. It’s also only a 1-2 minute walk from Majestic Twin Hotel, which is where we usually stay.
Even though this cafe is on a quiet road, it’s pretty popular and is open until 9 pm, which is a definite bonus.
Prices here are very reasonable and the coffee is very good quality. You also get a free cup of tea with each hot coffee.

Bar-Rista
This small cafe is about 20-30 meters further down the road than Kaffe Italia (mentioned above). Just before you come to the bend in the road you’ll see a few shops on your left. Look into the lane and you’ll see the cafe.
The coffee that’s served here comes from Thailand’s Chiang Mai district and tastes very good. There’s also a very popular noodle restaurant opposite that’s always packed at lunchtime.

Panito Cafe
We had driven passed this cafe a couple of times, so decided to check it out. We were in for a surprise, as the owner turned out to be someone that was in the same class as Miu when she was in school in Surin many moons ago. And it’s actually a very nice cafe, so we’ll be popping back there often.
The cafe has a small seating area outside and lots more seating inside. It’s a great place to sit and relax. It’s fairly easy to find, as it’s right opposite Surin Technical College, near the footbridge. It’s also just a short walk from the market at the junction of Luck Muang Road and Sirin Thon.
This cafe also has free wifi, which worked very well when we were there.

Kid Teung
This is another of my favorite cafes and is located near the railway station. As you leave the station, take the second left, into Thanon Sanit Nikomrut, and you’ll see the cafe on your right. It’s only about 2-3 minutes walk.
The cafe only has a few stools inside, but has outdoor seating both downstairs and upstairs. The cafe also has a very large selection of bakery items. Being in the center of town means that it’s incredibly popular.
The upstairs seating has plenty of windows with views out onto the surrounding streets.

Relax Coffee Shop
Relax Coffee Shop is near Noi Ruen Rom Market and opposite Surin Provincial Electricity Authority. It’s also only a few minutes walk from Ruamphet Hospital. It has seating inside and out, with a choice of three outdoor seating areas.
The inside of the cafe is quite small, with seating for around 8 people. But the three outside areas can seat around 40-50 people. It was quite busy when we were there, and the staff were very friendly.
The coffee here is very good and very reasonably priced. As well as drinks, they also serve a limited amount of food.
This cafe is only around 3-4 minutes’ walk from Kaffe Italia.

Cafe Bike
This cafe is just across the road from Relax Coffee Shop, and is very small, although the coffee is pretty good. It’s also very popular, especially with people buying coffee to take away.
We like this cafe and would visit more often, but it’s one of the very few that doesn’t have wifi, which is a bit of a drawback for us.
The last time we were there we saw a few elephants across the road. They’d just taken part in a ceremony for new monks at the nearby temple.

Cafe Duck – Krungsri Nork Road
I only discovered this cafe today, and it’s already a favorite. Friendly staff and great coffee. An Americano here is only 30 baht ($1). I have since found out that they have branches all over the northeast, with a few others in Surin. I’ll add them below when I visit them.
This cafe is a fair way out of the town center though, so probably a little too far to walk. When we went on a Sunday morning it was very busy indeed, which is usually a good sign.
Cafe Duck has seating inside (with aircon) and outside. The outside seating is in the shade, so it’s a good place to sit. Free wifi is available. The cafe is located just across the road from Wat Prom Temple.
Cafe Duck is part of a small chain with other branches in Buriram, Sisaket, Kalasin and Roi Et.

Cafe Duck – Surin Pukdee Road
This is another branch of the excellent Cafe Duck. This is only 2-3 minutes’ walk from the train station. Leave the train station and take the first small lane on your left. Walk to the end, cross the road and follow it around the bend. You’ll see Cafe Duck a few meters ahead of you on your right. It’s also very close to Majestic Hotel. Leave hotel and turn right and follow the lane to the end. Turn left at the main road and you’ll see Cafe Duck.

Opening Hours: 07:00-17:30 every day
Americano: 30 baht ($1)
Free Wifi: Yes
Corner Cafe
Corner Cafe has an extensive food menu and seems more restaurant than cafe. There isn’t anything for vegetarians though, as all the dishes are meat-based. When we were there it seemed very popular with expats, so had a completely different vibe to the cafes mentioned above. It’s fairly new though and staff are friendly.

Starbucks
For those that are fans of Starbucks, you’ll be glad to know that one has now opened in Surin. It’s in the new Robinson shopping mall, which is a few kilometers out of town. No free wifi and much more expensive than the other cafes.

Opening Hours: 10:00-21:00 every day
Americano: 75 baht ($2.50)
