Surin is a fairly small town, and we didn’t find many vegetarian restaurants there. But here are the ones that we did find. They’re all shophouse style places and very cheap.
Sanchai J Food
Despite being a little way put of town, this is our favorite veggie place in Surin. Like the others, the foot is pre-cooked, so you just need to point out what you want. It’s almost directly opposite the side entrance to Surin Hospital. The main entrance to the hospital is on Luck Muang Road.
This restaurant has a nice seating area which looks like it was recently renovated. It’s quite minimalist in design and a nice change from the usual shophouse seating.
The food is on display at the entrance. As well as rice and a choice of hot dishes, they also have a daily noodle dishes. The main dishes change every day, so you won’t get bored eating here. Sometimes we;ve eaten here early morning and late afternoon on the same day, and the dishes have been different as well.
You’ll be able to find the restaurant quite easily by looking for the big yellow vegetarian sign outside the shop.
They also have a small shop area next to the seating area. This sells things like dry soya, vegetarian sauces, etc.
Even though this is a little outside the center of town, it’s well worth the effort to get there.

Kwan Yin Vegetarian
Kuan Yin is a typical local style Thai restaurant. All food is pre-cooked and you make your selection from the food on display. At lunchtime there’s a selection of around 10 hot dishes. There’s less food available after lunchtime, so arrive early get get the best choice.
We ate here often while we were in Surin. The dish above cost around 40 baht ($1.35), so prices are very reasonable. This shop also sells dried food such as brown rice and soy protein.
Kwan Yin Vegetarian Details
Address: 641 Luck Muang Road (near junction with Suriyarart Road) – look for the big yellow banner outside the shop

Thanasarn Road Vegetarian
This is another shophouse style Thai place where the food is pre-cooked. Just selected what you want from the food at the front of the shop. They also sell vegetarian som tum, which you don’t find very often. It can be very spicy though, so ask for less chilies if you don’t like your food too spicy.
This shop also sells lots of dried and frozen vegetarian and vegan food.
This restaurant is just around the corner from Kuan Yin – about a 2-minute walk.
Thanasarn Road Vegetarian Details

Thetsaban 3 Road Vegetarian
This is a typical Thai shophouse-style vegetarian restaurant where the food is pre-cooked. You just pick what you want from the dishes on display. When we arrived the owner wasn’t there, but the woman who sells watermelons outside the shop told us to help ourselves and that the owner would be back soon. So Miu got behind the counter and started dishing out the food. Then another couple arrived and thought that she worked there, but the watermelon woman decided to take over. A few minutes later the owner returned and seemed pleased that we’d got the food ourselves. This is typical of the laid-back attitude you find in Thailand.
This place is fairly small, with only 3-4 tables. There was a choice of around six hot dishes when we were there. There’s also a sign on the wall in Thai saying that they don’t use MSG.
We think the restaurant is at 207 Thetsaban 3 Road, but there are two signs attached to the wall of the shop with different numbers. One says 130/5, and the one below it say 207 (in Thai). We asked the owner and she said she thought it was 207, but wasn’t sure. But it’s just a few shops along from a petrol station so should be easy to find. Just look for the yellow flags.
